QT022 - Enabling UPnP/SIP support on the FVS318

Introduction

The FVS318 ProSafe VPN router includes optional support for UPnP or Universal Plug and Play.  This allows UPnP-aware applications such as Windows Messenger to automatically configure the router to allow traffic such as file transfer and H.323-based audio and video conferencing.  (It also allows these applications to be used simultaneously on several PC's, which is often difficult to do on a traditional NAT router)

It also provides additional mechanisms to manage your router and internet traffic, when used with a UPnP-aware operating system such as Microsoft Windows XP.

Enabling UPnP

Firmware version 1.10 is required to support UPnP.  Refer to Quick Tip 024 for download instructions.

UPnP is disabled by default.

To enable UPnP, select LAN IP Setup from the router's Advanced menu.  Check the Enable UPnP checkbox, and click Apply.

 

Security Considerations

Enabling UPnP functions on your network may increase some security exposures, and these risks should be considered before enabling UPnP.

• UPnP weaknesses have been identified in some Microsoft operating systems.  Ensure that you have applied the latest service packs and patches.

• Non-privileged users may be able to control some router functions, including adding and removing port mappings.

• UPnP dynamically adds port mappings on behalf of some UPnP-aware applications.  These mappings may not be removed if the application terminates abnormally.
