The DG814 is a connection-sharing gateway
router with built-in ADSL modem, allowing the user to share an ADSL
connection among several PC's, as well as providing basic NAT-firewall security.
For some requirements, it may be more
appropriate to use a more sophisticated router, eg the FVS318 VPN router, in
conjunction with a simple ADSL modem. Netgear will soon be releasing
the DM602 ADSL Modem for this purpose, but the DG814 can also be
re-configured to operate as a modem.
In network terms, an ADSL modem functions as a
transparent bridge, converting traffic between the ATM PVC used on the
carrier side of the modem and (usually) ethernet frames used on the customer
side.
To simplify typical configuration of the DG814, and
avoid unnecessary confusion, the ability to re-configure as an ADSL modem is
not part of the standard user interface.
To reconfigure the DG814 as a modem, connect
to the router with a web browser using the URL
http://192.168.0.1/DeviceType.htm.
(If you have changed the LAN IP settings of the DG814, adjust the URL as
needed).
The following screen will be
displayed:

Click the Device Type dropdown,
and change the value from DG814 (GATEWAY) to DG814
(MODEM). Click the Apply button.

The Basic Settings page will
then be displayed:

Select the appropriate Multiplexing Method and
VPI and VCI values and click Apply. For most Australian
ISP's, use the following values:
|
Multiplexing Method |
LLC-Based |
|
VPI |
8 |
|
VCI |
35 |
When the DG814 is re-configured as a modem,
the internal DHCP server is automatically disabled to avoid a conflict with
other network devices. If you wish to reconfigure the DG814 at a later
time, you will need to set your PC to use a static IP address.
